  There is a flat enrollment fee for our program, and students attend regularly. After a diagnostic assessment, we create a personalized learning plan with a recommended session frequency tailored to your child’s goals.

• Why do you require an assessment for enrollment?

  The diagnostic assessment serves to identify each student’s current skill level, knowledge gaps, and learning goals, so we can design a plan tailored to their specific needs.  

  Understanding each student’s unique approach to math helps us adjust instruction to their learning style and pace and empower them to unlock their true potential.

• What happens during the initial assessment at Mathnasium of Balboa?

  At Mathnasium of Balboa, we understand that assessments can sometimes feel stressful for students. That’s why we take a personalized and engaging approach to each assessment. We start by building rapport with your child, giving them a short center tour, and setting expectations.
  
  We conduct both a verbal and written assessment to identify your child’s strengths and areas for improvement as well as to gain a true understanding of how each student approaches and thinks about math. More importantly, our assessments don’t feel like a test – we use interactive methods to ensure your child feels comfortable and confident.

• What type of questions are on the assessment?

  We carefully craft our assessment questions to evaluate specific skills that are critical for success in math. Our assessments cover a wide range of math skills and concepts, including grade-level or subject-specific skills, number sense, and concepts unique to Mathnasium.
  
  We use a combination of verbal and written questions, and it's possible that some of the questions may cover topics your child hasn't yet learned in school. Our goal is to get a comprehensive understanding of your child's current math abilities, so we can create a personalized learning plan that meets their unique needs and goals. 

• How do you teach math? What curriculum do you use?

  At Mathnasium of Balboa, we do not follow a traditional curriculum. We use our proprietary approach called the Mathnasium Method™, which combines personalized learning plans with proven teaching techniques to develop solid foundations for math mastery.  

  Our approach builds on each student’s existing knowledge, addressing the gaps in their understanding and introducing new concepts gradually and in a logical sequence. We work with students to expand their mathematical thinking so they can build the skills and confidence to excel in the classroom and beyond. 

• Do you work with advanced students or students who are struggling with math?

  Yes! We support students of all skill levels.

• Do you help students with their math homework?

  Yes, homework help is included in our sessions. Our tutors set aside time to help with assignments so students can reinforce the concepts they are covering at school and reduce stress at home.

• Does Mathnasium assign homework to students?

  No. All instruction takes place during sessions at the center. We do not assign additional homework, which means students can focus on making meaningful progress while they’re with us.

• Does Mathnasium of Balboa prepare students for math on standardized tests?

  Yes. Mathnasium of Balboa helps students get ready for math on standardized tests such as state exams, the SAT®, and ACT®.   

  Our program combines targeted practice with problem-solving strategies, as well as confidence-building support, so students perform their best on test day and beyond.
