Mathnasium Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know if my child is on grade level in middle school math?

One of the simplest ways to estimate whether a student is on grade level is to see if they are able to complete math homework without additional assistance. Typically, students performing at grade level have a positive attitude toward math, and their grades reflect consistent performance. In contrast, students with below grade level skills struggle to keep up in their math class, and they show a lack of confidence and little desire to advance in the subject.

  • Which curriculum does Mathnasium use for middle school students?

At Mathnasium, we do not follow a pre-set curriculum. We follow learning plans tailored to each student’s unique learning needs and style.

Personalized learning plans are a cornerstone of our proprietary teaching approach called the Mathnasium Method™ which is designed to help students develop a deep understanding of math and expand their mathematical thinking.

From building Number Sense — a deep understanding of how numbers relate to each other — to Socratic questioning, our approach applies proven teaching techniques to also enhance the students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Which middle school math topics can Mathnasium’s tutors help with?

Mathnasium works with students of all skill levels to help them learn and master any middle school math class and topic, including:

    • Rational Numbers
    • Pre-Algebra

    • Expressions
  • How does Mathnasium help middle school students who are struggling with math?

At Mathnasium, we like to say that our tutors “teach for understanding,” which means that we teach math in a way that makes sense to our students.

Our tutors provide face-to-face instruction in an interactive and supportive group environment, to motivate and guide each student to unlock their math potential. We use personalized learning plans that build upon what the student already knows and add new concepts in sequence, so they can close their knowledge gaps while developing a deep understanding of middle school math.

Working with us, many students have transformed how they think and feel about math. In fact, as many as 93% of our students report an improved attitude towards math after attending Mathnasium.

  • Can Mathnasium’s middle school math tutors help with math homework?

Yes, our tutors will set aside time during each session to help students with their school homework.

  • Is online math tutoring any different than in-person tutoring?

No, there is no difference between our in-center and online math sessions. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your nearest Mathnasium Learning Center.

  • What happens during the initial assessment at Mathnasium?

At Mathnasium, we know that assessments can sometimes feel stressful for students, so we designed ours to make students feel comfortable and confident right from the start. We begin by building a rapport with students, giving them a short tour of our center and setting expectations.

We conduct both a verbal and written assessment to understand how each student approaches and thinks about math. This helps us identify their strengths, areas they need help with, and goals, to create a learning plan targeted to their specific needs.

  • How can I enroll my middle school student at Mathnasium?

Enrolling at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:

    1. Find a learning center and contact them, even if your child will be following an online learning program.
    2. Book an assessment so we can pinpoint any learning gaps and develop a personalized learning plan guided by expert math tutors.
    3. Schedule your sessions. Your local center director is there to help you schedule the sessions for your child and guide you through the process.
