At Mathnasium of Altrincham, our specially trained instructors use the Mathnasium Method™ to help children develop a deep and lasting understanding of maths. This proprietary teaching approach is built around personalised learning plans and combines mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques, giving each child the specific instruction they need rather than a one-size-fits-all lesson.
In an area where selective school entry is a priority for many families, solid maths foundations matter. The Mathnasium Method™ is designed to build them.
Our caring, specially trained instructors work with children from Reception through to GCSE at our centre on Stamford New Road and online via Mathnasium@home. Sessions are delivered in a supportive one-to-one environment, with each child's work guided by their own personalised learning plan.
Altrincham sits in the Trafford borough, home to some of the most sought-after state grammar schools in the country. Our tutors know the Trafford GL assessment well and are experienced in helping children prepare for it alongside their broader maths development.
Every child at Mathnasium of Altrincham starts with a diagnostic assessment. We use assessment-based insights to build a personalised learning plan that identifies exactly where each child needs support and charts a clear path forward, whether the goal is strengthening primary maths, preparing for the Trafford GL, or working towards a target grade at GCSE.
Each session builds on the last, closing knowledge gaps in a logical order so that new material always has something solid to sit on.

Mathnasium of Altrincham works with children from Reception through to GCSE, children aged 4 to 16, covering all Key Stages from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to KS4.
Trafford is one of the few areas in England that still has a fully selective grammar school system, which means the question of secondary school entry comes early for many local families. We work with children across all year groups, whether the immediate goal is the Trafford GL, a place at one of the area's independent schools, or simply strong and consistent progress through primary and secondary maths.
Our instructors cover the full breadth of primary and secondary maths, from early number skills and times tables through to algebra, geometry, ratio, probability, trigonometry, and statistics at GCSE level. We support pupils at every Key Stage from KS1 through to KS4, as well as the numerical reasoning skills that feature in selective school entrance assessments.
Sessions are guided by each child's personalised learning plan rather than a standard course, so a Year 3 pupil building multiplication fluency and a Year 11 pupil preparing for their Higher GCSE paper are each getting a programme that fits exactly where they are.
Mathnasium of Altrincham works differently from the typical tutoring arrangement.
Rather than responding week to week to whatever a pupil brings in, we work from a personalised learning plan built after a thorough diagnostic assessment. Every session is part of a structured programme designed to close knowledge gaps in the right order.
Our tutors follow the Mathnasium Method™ — used across 1,200+ centres worldwide — so the approach is consistent and the progress is cumulative. Sessions take place in a fun small-group environment, which many pupils find more engaging than one-to-one tutoring and which builds a confidence in maths that carries into the classroom and the exam hall.
We use the Mathnasium Method™ rather than following a fixed curriculum. The Method is founded on the idea that maths should make sense, that a pupil who understands why something works will remember it and apply it, even under pressure.
In practice, our tutors draw on mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques, all guided by each pupil's personalised learning plan. We can keep sessions closely aligned with the National Curriculum so that what pupils work on here connects directly with school, while also addressing the gaps that tend to build up over time and that standardised assessments, including the Trafford GL, are well designed to expose.
We work with children across the full ability range. In Altrincham and the wider Trafford area, a significant proportion of the pupils we see are academically strong and working towards selective school entry or aiming to stay ahead in demanding grammar and independent school environments.
For those children, we extend learning beyond the school curriculum — developing the problem-solving depth, speed, and accuracy that the Trafford GL and independent school entrance exams reward. For children who need to catch up or build confidence, we start from a secure point in their existing knowledge and move forward from there, closing gaps carefully so that every new topic lands properly.
Yes. The Trafford GL assessment is the selective test used for grammar school entry in the Trafford borough, and it is one of the most common reasons families come to us in Altrincham.
Trafford's grammar schools, including Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Sale Grammar School, and others, are among the most oversubscribed state schools in the country, and the maths and numerical reasoning elements of the GL assessment require well-grounded, systematic preparation.
We recommend beginning preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 to allow enough time to address knowledge gaps and build the consistent performance these papers demand. We also support pupils preparing for 11+ entrance assessments for independent schools in the area.
Yes! Beyond the Trafford GL, Mathnasium of Altrincham supports pupils sitting entrance assessments for independent schools in and around the area, including schools using their own papers or common entrance formats.
The maths component of most independent school assessments goes beyond the standard curriculum, and our personalised approach ensures pupils are prepared for the specific demands of the schools they are targeting.
Yes! Our instructors work with Year 10 and Year 11 pupils on personalised GCSE preparation plans built around their current grade, target, and the topics that need the most work. We cover the complete GCSE maths curriculum across both Foundation and Higher tiers: number, algebra, geometry, ratio, probability and statistics.
Grammar school pupils in Trafford often come to us with high grade targets and a need to keep pace with fast-moving classroom teaching. We build a plan that supports both, filling gaps efficiently and building the exam technique that Higher tier papers require.
Yes, we support Year 6 children preparing for their KS2 SATs® maths papers, working across both the Arithmetic and Reasoning components with a personalised plan focused on each pupil's specific areas of difficulty.
For many Altrincham families, Year 6 is also the Trafford GL year, so we are well practised in supporting pupils who are preparing for both at the same time.
We also support Year 4 children ahead of the Multiplication Tables Check and Year 2 children working towards their KS1 teacher assessments.
Mathnasium of Altrincham operates on a flat monthly membership fee, with several different options depending on your child’s unique situation. Following the diagnostic assessment, we will recommend a session schedule tailored to your child's personalised learning plan. Most students attend two to three times a week.
Call us at 0161 2586 585 for more information.
Use the Contact Us button on this page or email [email protected] to get in touch. We will arrange a diagnostic assessment at a convenient time as the first step to getting to know them and their learning needs before building their personalised learning plan.
After the assessment, we will go through the results with you, explain what we have put together, and answer any questions before your child's first session.
