At Mathnasium of Tunbridge Wells, our specially trained instructors use the Mathnasium Method™ to help children move from uncertainty to confidence in maths. Rather than teaching children to follow procedures by rote, this proprietary teaching approach uses personalised learning plans and a combination of mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques to build true understanding — the kind that holds up when the questions get harder.
Tunbridge Wells children sit some of the most competitive exams in the country. The Mathnasium Method™ builds the foundations those exams demand.
Our caring, specially trained instructors work with children from Reception through to GCSE at our centre on Calverley Road in the heart of Tunbridge Wells. All sessions are delivered in-centre in a supportive small-group environment where every child follows their own personalised learning plan.
With grammar schools, independent schools, and the Kent Test all part of the local landscape, our instructors are well placed to support the specific academic goals that Tunbridge Wells families are working towards.
Every child at Mathnasium of Tunbridge Wells begins with a thorough diagnostic assessment. The results give us an accurate picture of what each child already knows and where the knowledge gaps are, and from there, we build a personalised learning plan that sets out a clear, logical path forward.
No two plans look alike. A Year 4 student beginning their 11+ preparation will follow a very different programme from a Year 10 student targeting a grade 7 at GCSE, but both are built with the same care and the same goal: lasting maths mastery.

Specially Trained and Caring Team
Mark Braithwaite
Centre Director
I'm Mark Braithwaite the owner and Centre Director of Mathnasium of Tunbridge Wells. After 25 years working for larger companies in the UK, Sweden and China I was looking for something different to do. I studied science at University and started my career with a large accountancy firm. I spent many hours helping my children understand and enjoy Maths as they grew up. I saw in Mathnasium a great way to teach, inspire and build confidence in children and wanted to get involved and make Maths fun!
Tobias Burch
Assistant Centre Manager
Hi, I'm Tobias Burch. I studied at both Beacon Sixth Form and North Kent College. I joined the team as Assistant Centre Manager and have been incredibly impressed to see how great of an environment this has been both for the children and the staff. It's incredible watching each individual progress, whether it be our students or our team members. I loved Maths in school and I've learnt to love Maths again here. Outside of the centre, I enjoy creating music and editing for social media. I hope to one day open a centre of my own!
Jennifer Bekker
Lead Instructor
Hi, I’m Jennifer, a graduate teacher with a major in mathematics. Maths is the one thing that truly makes sense to me, and I love helping students feel the same way. After 8 years of private tutoring I’m really impressed by the dynamic at Mathnasium. The atmosphere is incredibly welcoming, and the learning environment is both supportive and engaging. It really fosters a sense of confidence and excitement about learning maths!
James Thurgood
Instructor
I’m James, an A-Level student studying Maths, Further Maths, Economics, and Computer Science. I’m passionate about maths and excited to take that passion to the next level at university. At Mathnasium, I love helping kids crack tough problems and watching their confidence grow!
Kav Copas
Instructor
I have background in science & engineering and experience of working in industry, business & higher education. I love the challenge of helping our students develop their maths skills. Seeing students develop problem solving skills and enjoyment of learning is really rewarding. I believe Mathnasium's approach impacts students' education experience beyond maths and hopefully opens up future work opportunities. I also work as a development coach and help people in sport, business and personally to understand how psychological factors affect their health and performance. Developing resilience and a self-coaching mindset can be transformative on a personal and professional level.
Maria Tincu
Instructor
I'm Maria, an A-level student studying Maths, Biology and Chemistry, I love to find the trickiest maths questions to do in my free time, as I would like to pursue a career maths related in the future. I love to help students develop both their maths skills and their confidence, as I believe there is not a nicer feeling than the one of success!
Hasmik Amirbekyan
Instructor
Hi, I’m Hasmik! I’ve always loved mathematics because there’s something really satisfying about solving problems and helping concepts finally “click.” I’ve been working at Mathnasium for over a year, helping students of different ages grow in both skill and confidence. I love seeing students go from “I can’t do this” to “Wait… I actually get it now!”
One of the things I enjoy most about Mathnasium is the positive and encouraging atmosphere. I love helping students build confidence, improve their problem-solving skills, and discover that maths doesn’t have to feel scary — it can actually be fun!
Whether they would like to attend sessions in-centre or online, students can take 3 easy steps to enrol at Mathnasium.
All students begin their Mathnasium journey with a diagnostic assessment that pinpoints what they already know and what they still need to learn.

Mathnasium of Tunbridge Wells works with children from Reception through to GCSE, children aged 4 to 16, covering all Key Stages from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to KS4.
The Tunbridge Wells area has a strong selective school tradition, with grammar school entry via the Kent Test and competitive independent school admissions both featuring prominently for local families. We work with pupils across all year groups and all ability levels, supporting those pathways as well as the full range of mainstream primary and secondary school needs.
Our instructors cover the full range of primary and secondary maths, from early number and arithmetic through to algebra, geometry, ratio, trigonometry, probability and statistics at GCSE level. We support children at every Key Stage from KS1 through to KS4, as well as the numerical reasoning and problem-solving skills tested in selective entrance exams.
Every child works from a personalised learning plan, so sessions target the exact topics they need to focus on. A child preparing for the Kent Test will be working on very different material from one consolidating Year 8 algebra, but both are getting a programme built specifically around their needs.
The distinction between private tutors and Mathnasium is in the depth of the structure.
Every child starts with a diagnostic assessment, and their sessions are shaped by a personalised learning plan built specifically around their knowledge gaps, not just the topics that happened to come up in homework that week. Our tutors follow the Mathnasium Method™, a consistent teaching approach used across 1,200+ centres worldwide, so progress is cumulative and planned. Sessions take place in a fun small-group setting, which suits many children better than isolated one-to-one work and helps them build confidence alongside their peers.
We use the Mathnasium Method™, not a set curriculum. At its core, the Method is about making maths make sense, helping children understand the reasoning behind what they are doing rather than following steps they cannot explain.
Our instructors use a combination of mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written approaches, guided throughout by each child's personalised learning plan.
Sessions can align with the National Curriculum so that pupils are reinforcing what they cover in school, while also addressing gaps that may have built up across earlier year groups and strengthening the problem-solving foundations that selective exams and GCSEs both demand.
We work with children across the full ability range, and in Tunbridge Wells a large proportion of the children we see are preparing for selective school entry or working to maintain a strong academic performance in demanding school environments.
For high-achieving children, we extend their learning beyond the standard curriculum, sharpening problem-solving skills, building speed and accuracy, and developing the mathematical confidence that grammar and independent school entry requires.
For children who are finding maths difficult, we work from what they already know, closing gaps methodically so that new topics have the foundation they need to stick.
Yes! The Kent Test is the selective assessment used for grammar school entry in Kent, and it is one of the most common reasons families in Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding area come to us.
The maths and numerical reasoning elements of the Kent Test require solid foundations across arithmetic, problem-solving, and number — all areas the Mathnasium Method™ addresses directly.
We recommend starting preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 to allow enough time to close any knowledge gaps and build the consistent performance these papers require. We also support children preparing for the 11+ for independent school entry and Common Entrance assessments.
Yes, Mathnasium of Tunbridge Wells supports children sitting 11+ assessments for independent schools in the area, including those using GL Assessment or school-set papers.
The independent school sector around Tunbridge Wells — Somerhill, Rose Hill, Beechwood and others — is well regarded and competitive, and our tutors are experienced in helping children meet the maths demands of those admissions processes.
Yes, our tutors work with Year 10 and Year 11 pupils on personalised GCSE preparation plans built around their current grade, target, and the specific topics that need the most attention.
We cover the full GCSE maths curriculum across both Foundation and Higher tiers: number, algebra, geometry, ratio, probability, and statistics.
Many Tunbridge Wells children come to us when grammar or independent school expectations mean the bar for GCSE performance is particularly high. We help them meet it with a plan that is efficient and well-targeted.
Yes, Mathnasium of Tunbridge Wells supports pupils entering the Primary Maths Challenge, a national competition for pupils in Years 5 and 6 that rewards strong problem-solving and mathematical reasoning.
Preparation sits naturally alongside the work we do on 11+ and entrance exam readiness, as the skills these competitions develop overlap significantly with what selective assessments demand.
Yes, we support Year 6 children preparing for their KS2 SATs® maths papers across both the Arithmetic and Reasoning components. As with all our exam preparation, sessions are guided by a personalised learning plan that targets each pupil's specific areas of difficulty, building both accuracy and confidence ahead of exam season.
We also support Year 4 children ahead of the Multiplication Tables Check and Year 2 children working towards their KS1 assessments.
Mathnasium of Tunbridge Wells operates on a flat monthly membership fee. Following the diagnostic assessment, we will recommend a session schedule tailored to your child's personalised learning plan. Most pupils attend two to three times a week.
For current pricing, contact us at [email protected] or call 01892 328 131.
Use the Contact Us button on this page, call us on 01892 328 131, or email [email protected] to arrange a diagnostic assessment. The assessment is where everything starts; it gives us the accurate picture of your child's maths that we need to build their personalised learning plan.
After the assessment, we will walk you through the results and the plan we have put together, and make sure you have everything you need before your child's first session.
